As the years go, we see new social media pop on your phone. The generation Z and the next one is and will born with the social media, it is a part of their life now. In 2016 a survey by Le Figaro prove that people between 16 and 24 spend more than 4 hours on they phone in a day. What is the consequence in our health?

Sadly, there is a lot.

First of all, it impacts your sleep, between 1 to 2 hours less and we can have trouble to sleep well (waking up every hours for example). Bad sleep leads to bad mood. We see a decrease in concentration and attention capacities, a decrease in memory and learning performance as well as drowsiness resulting in academic difficulties. Some people react with behavioural disorders (hyperactivity, aggressiveness…) or anxiety or even depression (this can also be due to cyberbullying on social media, that is a mental health impact).

Secondly, we see case of cyberaddiction which is a psychological disorder that manifest itself in an irrepressible and obsessive need to use internet or social media. Addiction is dangerous for you and the one you love, it has an impact individual, family, social and professional. You fell a lack or discomfort in case or interruption of behaviour. Social media are an addiction like video games, bets, tabaco…

Then, according to a study conducted at the university of Pittsburg, people who visit social media mor often are at greater risk of developing eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia. The spread of weight stereotypes or the many physical challenged posted on social media could explain this observation.

Finally, on social media “one person’s happiness is another person’s misfortune” apply. Several studies agree that the more users consult Facebook or Instagram the more they compare their life with the moments of happiness spread on the profiles of their friends. Inevitably, their lives appear to them less beautiful, less exciting and more monotonous than those idealized lives. As a result, feelings of depression, frustration and even anger and jealousy are heightened

Parents have to be aware and worried to protect their children and the future.
